About Embleton
Access to the bay from Embleton is via a short walk east along a country lane; the beach itself is one of the most unpopulated on the coast and perhaps the safest for families. The village is ancient and has records dating back beyond the War of the Roses and boasts a 12th-century Norman church.
THINGS TO DO
Dunstanburgh Golf Course
Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Course provides some of the most picturesque golf in Northumberland. Playing up to the ruins of the 14th-century castle and with the sweeping sands of Embleton Bay, the breathtaking scenery can distract even the most focussed golfer.
Stargazing Quarry Nature Reserve
Embleton Quarry Nature Reserve is an excellent stargazing destination under the fabulous dark skies of the Northumberland Coast AONB. Stargazers will be amazed at the starry skies above, and astrophotographers can capture incredible images of the Northern Lights reflected in the quarry lake. Off-road parking on the edge of Embleton Village enables access to the quarry a short walk away. Astronomers from the Northumberland Astronomical Society use the venue to host public stargazing events.
Dunstanburgh Castle
Along the sea-battered Northumberland coast of England resides Dunstanburgh Castle. It was built by Thomas, the 2nd Earl of Lancaster, in 1313. Several decades later, in the 1380s, John of Gaunt inherited the castle, added a second gatehouse to the fortress, and converted the massive gatehouse built by Thomas of Lancaster into a keep. However, his enhancements were performed hastily using a poor-quality stone. Consequently, they did not withstand the test of time, as this portion of the structure fell into ruins much faster than the original construction.
